The hills grew more round and green as they left the crags behind. Holt’s spirits rose... they must first cross the flatter land, and here it might be possible to effect a rescue...
Holt was hard pressed to keep up, the more so as by now his rations had run out. He had no time to hunt... Once, the Firbolg made their halt near to a huge patch of bilberries. They would not touch them, but Holt went down on all fours and crammed himself with the luscious fruit until he could take no more. His face and hands were covered in purple stain, and he suffered for the surfeit later, but it banished hunger for a while.
There came a morning when the gangrel-host drew up before a frowning cliff, in which gaped an arching hole. Behind the hole the cliff had fallen in, leaving it like the rough-hewn gateway of some city or fortress, though no doors closed it... This side of the arch lay the sunlight of Earda; beyond, the road to darkness, the secret world of creatures whose deeds shunned the brightness of day.
